More a right-brain process, creative thinking involves producing something original. Closely linked to De Bono’s “Six Thinking Hats” that was just mentioned, it banks on the belief that we can improve our creativity through a form of systematic training. When we think ‘creatively,’ we process our thoughts not only rationally but also emotionally.

As a creative thinker, you can maximize the use of the following skills: associative thinking, imagery, brainstorming, flexibility, fluency, attribute listing, synectics, and forced relationships.
Take the time to read Roger von Oech’s book, “A Whack on the Side of the Head.” It contains more than 60 quick reads on inspiring stories. It will encourage you to entice out your good ideas through inspiration and motivation.

Alex Osborn and Sidney Parnes have also come up with the C.P.S., or the 6-Step Creative Problem Solving process, wherein all steps of the problem-solving method are equally stressed. This balance is important in enabling a student to think both creatively and critically. It makes use of the following tools which have been discovered to be highly effective for learning: brainstorming, brainwriting, hits and highlighting, use of an evaluation matrix, paired comparison analysis, use of forced connections, listing of pluses, potentials, and concerns, and SCAMPER (an acronym for the kinds of questions you need to force yourself to answer to stretch your imagination to its limits).

Creative thinking can stem way past anything that seems conventional also. I have witnessed students not look past the basic steps to know where to put their time and energy when It came time to study, wasting countless hours over work that was not required to be revised.
