You never know sometimes what rubs people the wrong way. In this instance the people is your date’s family and what’s rubbing them the wrong way is you.
You were the life of the party when you met your date’s family. You laughed at their jokes and even told a couple of good ones yourself. You did not hog any of the conversations nor were you just a wallflower either. You had the right balance of listening, talking and asking intelligent questions without trying to be nosy.
So it comes as a stunning shock to you when your date tells you that their family did not warm up to you. No , that’s putting it mildly. Try dislike highway with the exit ramp to hate land.
The news knocks you for a loop. Mind you it did the same thing to your dating partner. The felt so good about you; which is why they were so proud to introduce you to the family. Now their attitude which they expressed in no uncertain terms to your date has left the both of you shaken.
Not much you can do against those odds right? Maybe.
1. Explore
Find out from your date what it was that you said or did that rubbed his or her family the wrong way. Sometimes you can say or do things which strike you as trivial but may be a major sticking point to some one else. Let your date play detective and report back to you.
2. Survey
Ask your date was it everyone in the family who felt that way or just someone specific. At times the loudest voice is interpreted as the only voice or at least the one that speaks for everyone else. Find out how many people felt that way. It’s possible that not every body share those feelings. Some family members may not have expressed an opinion one way or another.
3. You Don’t Care
That’s an attitude which some people may not want to try for but for others it has gotten them thru a lot of tough situations. You tell yourself you are not going to see these people all the time so their judgment does not matter. Your date has no want or desire to break up because of their opinions and neither do you. What they say does not affect you one way or another. If they don’t like you then that is their hard luck.
You may not have done anything wrong and been the epitome of manners and good taste but for whatever reason people are still not going to like you and that includes your date’s family. Talk it over with your date and make a decision. If you decide to stay together then stay classy towards your date’s family. Do not find yourself sinking to their level and returning negative for negative.
